Claire and Brock, the original keepers of Great Blasket, say the island ‘had a lasting effect’ on them

It’s been a week since Brock Montgomery and his partner, Claire de Haas, left their role as guardians of Great Blasket Island, but even though their time living on Ireland’s famous literary mecca has come to an end, the couple said this week that what they have learned on the island over the past six months will stay with them for years to come.

It was truly a dream come true for Brock, a former Canadian professional ice hockey player from Moose Jaw, Canada; and Claire, from Alkmaar in the Netherlands, when they were announced as the island’s new caretakers in January this year. That dream came true in April when they took up residence for what was to be a six-month stay they would never forget.
