Frontline medical workers are offered free ferry rides on Mackinac Island

Frontline healthcare professionals and first responders will be able to enjoy free travel to Mackinac Island throughout October, courtesy of Star Line Mackinac Island Hydro-Jet® Ferry.

“We wanted to find a way to say thank you to those who have done so much to help our families and communities during the pandemic,” Star Line General Manager Jerry Fetty said. “The frontline healthcare professionals and first responders are great people who have put themselves in harm’s way to help and protect us all over the past 18 months. We felt it was important to do something to show our appreciation for all they have done.

“As Mackinac’s only year-round ferry service, our Star Line family understands the unique challenges of providing continued and essential service during the pandemic,” said Fetty. “We have great respect and admiration for these frontline healthcare professionals and first responders.”

Those who qualify for the free return tickets, which will be available October 1-31, include:

  • Physicians, physician assistants, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, certified practical nurses, respiratory therapists and respiratory technicians who provided direct care to COVID-19 patients
  • Law enforcement officers, including local and federal police officers, state troopers, county sheriffs, and correctional officers
  • Firefighters, including career and volunteer firefighters
  • Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs)
  • 911 dispatchers

“October can be one of the most beautiful and relaxing months to visit Mackinac Island, so we sincerely hope these ‘everyday heroes’ take this opportunity to visit the island,” Fetty said. . “Hopefully this can help brighten up one of the few days off they have in these difficult times.”

To claim the free ferry passes, eligible workers must present their employee badge with work credentials at the Star Line ticket office in Mackinaw City or St. Ignace. Star Line’s Mackinaw City Dock #1 is located at 801 S. Huron Street, Mackinaw City, MI 49701. Star Line’s St. Ignace Dock #3 is located at 587 N. State Street, St. Ignace, MI 49781. Free tickets will not be available online. One round trip per person, please.
